Vietnam holds consultation on hydrogen energy and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development strategy

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), in coordination with the German Development Cooperation Organization (GIZ), will organize a comprehensive consultation meeting on "Developing Hydrogen Energy and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Vietnam" on August 20, 2026, in Hanoi. The meeting is part of the "Promoting Energy Transition in Vietnam (TEV)" project, aimed at implementing Vietnam's Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Time: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Venue: Room 210, Building B, MOIT Headquarters, 54 Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi.
Chaired by: Leaders of MOIT and GIZ.
The consultation program is divided into two main sessions:
Morning Session (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Focus on Hydrogen Energy

International Context: DNV presents on low-carbon commodity market development, reference costs, and lessons for Vietnam.

Domestic Status: Consultant VNERGY reports on the implementation status of the Hydrogen Energy Development Strategy, with proposals and recommendations.

Policy Mechanisms: The Department of Oil, Gas, and Coal discusses policy mechanisms to promote strategy implementation.

Business Perspectives: Representatives from TGS, Messer, PVGas, and the Institute of Energy share their hydrogen development plans.
Afternoon Session (1:30 PM – 4:25 PM): Focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Overview and Global References: GIZ introduces SAF, followed by DNV's presentation on the international market and key drivers.

Vietnam Market Assessment: Consultant VNERGY assesses the potential and provides recommendations for SAF market development in Vietnam.

Domestic and Foreign Business Perspectives: Petrolimex and Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Company (BSR) will share insights on opportunities, challenges, and the competitive landscape for SAF.
The meeting includes open discussion sessions moderated by GIZ and a concluding summary. Representatives were requested to confirm attendance by August 14, 2026.
Additional Information: The Vietnam ASEAN Hydrogen Club (VAHC) has received an invitation to attend this important consultation meeting. However, due to a prior commitment by leaders of VAHC to co-host the "Energy Evolution" workshop with its member Phoenix Contact at the same time, the Club might not be able to send a representative to attend in person. Instead, VAHC will submit a comprehensive strategy proposal in writing to the Organizing Committee of the MOIT workshop, aiming to contribute its perspectives and insights from the business community in the hydrogen sector.
