VAHC Welcomes New Member TMEIC: Adding a Power Electronics Technology Piece to Vietnam's Hydrogen Ecosystem

From September 2026, Vietnam ASEAN Hydrogen Club (VAHC) is pleased to welcome TMEIC Corporation (Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation) as a new member. With a world-leading power electronics technology foundation and a system integrator role in the global hydrogen value chain, TMEIC is expected to add a vital piece to the hydrogen ecosystem taking shape in Vietnam and the ASEAN region.

 

TMEIC was formed from the integration of the industrial business segments of Toshiba Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, inheriting the technological foundation and extensive experience of two leading Japanese conglomerates. The company operates in three core areas: rotating machinery (motors, generators), power electronics (inverters, rectifiers), and integrated system engineering, with the capability to integrate entire systems from power conversion and control to operation, rather than supplying individual components alone.

 

TMEIC Asia (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. officially commenced operations in October 2025, with Takuya Kagawa serving as Chairman and Otsubo Yumihito as the legal representative and General Director. The company's office is located at Room 721-3, 7th Floor, Me Linh Point Tower, No. 2 Ngo Duc Ke Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

 

In the hydrogen sector, TMEIC's most important role is supplying IGBT rectifiers that convert AC power from the grid into high-quality DC power for water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. The company's TMHyREC-IGBT product achieves conversion efficiency of approximately 97%, DC ripple below 3%, and power factor above 99%, helping reduce stress on electrolyzer membranes, extend equipment lifespan, and improve hydrogen production efficiency. Unlike traditional thyristor rectifiers that require harmonic filters and reactive power compensation, TMEIC's IGBT rectifier naturally produces low harmonics and high power factor, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for external filtering equipment, lowering investment costs, operating costs, and system complexity. The modular and containerized design allows for flexible capacity expansion, rapid installation, and space savings, making it particularly suitable for distributed electrolysis stations in Vietnam.

 

Beyond rectifiers, TMEIC has also developed a line of explosion-proof, pressure-resistant motors for hydrogen environments. In July 2025, the company became the first Japanese electrical equipment manufacturer to obtain IECEx international certification for explosion-proof, pressure-resistant motors used in hydrogen gas environments, with a power range from 37kW to 185kW. These motors achieve efficiency equivalent to the IE3 standard, contributing to energy savings and reduced operating costs for hydrogen handling facilities such as refueling stations.

 

TMEIC not only supplies individual equipment but has also established itself as a system integrator in the hydrogen value chain. In April 2026, the company received its first order as a system integrator for the electric propulsion system on a 40,000 m³ liquefied hydrogen carrier being built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, with a total output exceeding 10 MW, among the largest in Japan. The vessel uses an electric propulsion system that utilizes boil-off gas from liquefied hydrogen as propulsion energy and power source, playing a pivotal role in establishing logistics infrastructure for the commercial-scale liquefied hydrogen supply chain in the 2030s. The system uses motors and TMdrive-70e3 drives achieving conversion efficiency of approximately 98%, maintaining high stability and efficiency even as load and power fluctuate during vessel operation.

 

In the field of hydrogen ecosystem integration, TMEIC serves as the industrial host for a multi-technology green hydrogen project in Tumkur, Karnataka, India. The project, implemented by Waaree Clean Energy Solutions, will build an integrated green hydrogen ecosystem encompassing production, storage, and utilization at a single site, with a hybrid system using both PEM and alkaline electrolysis, along with compression, high-pressure hydrogen storage, and refueling stations, plus a charging station for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. This project aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and is expected to become a scalable model for future deployments.

 

In Vietnam, TMEIC has been present for many years and officially established its subsidiary TMEIC Asia (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. in Ho Chi Minh City in October 2025 to strengthen local customer support and enhance sales and engineering capabilities. As of the end of 2020, TMEIC had delivered a total of 2 GW of SOLAR WARE STATION systems to large-scale solar power plants in Vietnam, affirming its position in the renewable energy sector. TMEIC's official participation in VAHC will create a bridge between global power electronics technology capabilities and the increasingly clear demand for hydrogen infrastructure development in Vietnam.

 

VAHC highly appreciates TMEIC's contributions to the global hydrogen value chain and believes that TMEIC's participation will add important capabilities for Club members in the areas of power supply for electrolysis, system integration, and equipment safety in hydrogen environments. The Club looks forward to working closely with TMEIC to promote feasible, efficient, and safe hydrogen solutions in Vietnam and the ASEAN region.
