On October 30, 2024 at New World Saigon Hotel, Mr. Le Ngoc Anh Minh, Chairman of VAHC has joined as a speaker at Panel B: Wind, Energy Storage, Hydrogen Project Updates and Pipeline in VIetnam, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Australia, India, etc.

Here is a summary of Mr. Minh's sharing at the Panel:

  • According to IEA report, in 2023, globally 97 million tons of H2 produced but less than 1% of low-emission H2. 2030 target 43 mil tons of low-emission H2 to be produced but the demand is of only 11 mil tons.
  • Low emission H2 is not a dream. Need to create demand, need to well finance in way of subsidies, need to support to invent new technology and need to have good policies and frameworks.
  • Vietnam issued H2 strategy in Feb this year, targeting 0.5 mil tons/2030 and 20 mil tons/2050.
  • In my opinion, H2 producer should be focusing on industrial sector of main industries such as steel, cement, refining oil, chemical and fertilizer, part of heavy and long distance transport.
  • Peter Thompson from Arup excellently moderated the Panel. Thank you! We almost agree that H2 is not a dream that people may be hyped. H2 accounts for a some certain % of energy mix on path to net zero 2050 (Vietnam PDP8: 0.19%/2030, 7.2%/2050, IEA Global: 2%/2030, 9%/2050). There are some misunderstanding from here that H2 can change the whole world and some project developers try to base on H2 to hype to expand their land funds and it can be the problem in Vietnam the SAME as solar and wind rapid development in the past years: so many projects came out and the projects owners cannot sell electricity to the grid! We don't have enough power grid infrastructure for renewable electricty (from wind and solar) and we have almost zero infrastructure for H2 now. If many H2 production projects established here, again, the problem of wind and solar will repeat.
  • H2 producer who wants to export to EU, think about other regions like South America, Africa, India, Australia and Middle East, especially South America where most metioned by IEA Gobal Hydrogen Review 2024. Consider about nearer offtakers in ASEAN and Northeast Asia.
  • I also talked about natural H2 that VAHC team detected in Southern province of Ca Mau.

Thanks my colleague speakers Riccardo Felici from OWC, Quang Huynh from Super Energy, Han Fei from China Power Engineering, Phillip (Tien)- VATEC, Thomas Jakobsen from IndoChina Energy, Cuong Tran Duc from CM Energy and see you again !
