Japanese company brings decarbonization technology suite from hydrogen production, methanation to circular economy applications

At the Energy Evolution seminar held on August 20 in Ho Chi Minh City, Dr. Nguyen Phuc Thanh – Director of Kanadevia's Hanoi Representative Office – presented the company's Power-to-X solutions, focusing on the PEM electrolysis system and methanation technology.

PEM Hydrogen Generation System

Kanadevia has developed the HydroSpring PEM electrolysis system with outstanding features:

  • Rapid response to fluctuations in renewable energy output

  • High-purity hydrogen production

  • Compact design and high scalability

The first project commenced operation in 2025 with 6 MW capacity (approx. 1,126 Nm³/h), supplying hydrogen to the Suntory Hakushu plant in Japan for use in a hydrogen boiler (demonstration). The project was supported by NEDO's Green Innovation Fund.

Kanadevia also decided to establish a mass production factory with GW capacity in 2024, approved by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under the GX Supply Chain Construction Support Program. This positions Kanadevia as a frontier electrolyzer manufacturer in Japan.

Methanation Technology

Kanadevia's methanation system uses catalytic technology to convert CO₂ and H₂ into CH₄ (methane). Key technical features include:

  • Reaction starts at 200°C

  • High durability: over 20,000 hours

  • Methane purity of 95% or higher

  • Over 99% conversion at ambient pressure

  • Energy efficiency of 75-80%

Kanadevia has operated two methanation plants in Japan:

  • Yokohama: 125 Nm³/h capacity, commissioned Q1/2022

  • Odawara: 12.5 Nm³/h capacity, commissioned Q1/2022
These are the world's first methanation plants using CO₂ recovered from a waste-to-energy (WtE) plant, combining waste treatment with carbon capture and utilization (CCU).

Applications in Circular Economy

Kanadevia provides turnkey plants that can be combined with existing WtE and biogas installations, enhancing overall efficiency and economic benefits. Power-to-Gas technology converts electricity from unstable renewable sources into storable gases such as synthetic natural gas (SNG), hydrogen, or methane, contributing to the circular economy and Net-Zero goals.

Contact in Vietnam

Kanadevia has a representative office in Hanoi and is ready to collaborate with Vietnamese partners in renewable energy and emission reduction.
