Dr. Đoàn Xuân Tiến speaking at the Seminar

On September 26, 2025, at the Workshop on Hydrogen Injection Technology into Internal Combustion Engines to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Emissions, organized by the Vietnam-ASEAN Hydrogen Club in collaboration with UEF University, Dr. Đoàn Mạnh Tiến – Deputy Head of the Research & Development (R&D) Department of PetroVietnam Gas (PV GAS) – delivered an inspiring presentation outlining a comprehensive and strategic vision for the company’s green hydrogen initiatives.

PV GAS – A Solid Foundation for the Future of Energy

Dr. Tiến opened the presentation by emphasizing PV GAS’s long-standing history and infrastructure strength. Since 1990, PV GAS has been a key enterprise within PetroVietnam, operating a nationwide natural gas network, offering a diverse product portfolio, and maintaining outstanding financial performance with annual revenues of 3–4 billion USD. This solid foundation enables PV GAS to take bold steps into new energy, with green hydrogen as a central strategic focus.

Green Hydrogen Pilot Project – From Concept to Reality

The highlight of the presentation was the Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at Dinh Cố Gas Plant, Long Điền, Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu. Featuring a 1MW electrolysis system powered by 2MWp solar energy, the project is expected to produce around 200 Nm³ of hydrogen per hour with 99.99% purity. The commercial operation is planned for Q1/2026, generating the first batch of clean hydrogen. Hydrogen will be transported via tube trailers and storage cylinders to potential customers in the steel, galvanized steel, and transportation sectors.

Strategic Initiatives and International Collaboration – A Long-Term Vision

Dr. Tiến also presented a series of strategic initiatives reflecting PV GAS’s long-term vision:

  • International Collaboration with GIZ & NEA: PV GAS is working closely with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and Neuman & Esser (NEA) to implement a second demonstration hydrogen project in either Vũng Tàu or Cà Mau. Notably, the funding proposal for the feasibility study (FS) has passed preliminary screening and is in the process of full submission.

  • Leveraging Existing Infrastructure for Hydrogen Blending: Research conducted in 2024–2025 confirmed the feasibility of blending hydrogen into PV GAS’s current natural gas pipeline system, opening significant potential for efficient and cost-effective hydrogen transport and distribution.

  • Practical Testing with GreenTek (Australia): In July 2025, PV GAS successfully conducted hydrogen injection tests into internal combustion engines in collaboration with GreenTek in Vũng Áng, Hà Tĩnh. This demonstrated the practical application of hydrogen and strengthened partnerships with leading technology providers while identifying potential off-takers such as GreenTek Vietnam.

Strategic Partnership Invitation – Expanding the Green Hydrogen Ecosystem

Concluding the presentation, Dr. Tiến delivered a clear message: PV GAS is actively seeking strategic partners in three areas – technology developers in hydrogen production, transport, and storage; potential hydrogen off-takers in industries such as steel, chemicals, transportation, and power generation; and partners in hydrogen logistics and transportation.
