On 11 July 2024, the Hong Kong Business Delegation attended a workshop focused on financing opportunities for green projects.  A special thanks to Mr. Phuong Tran and Mr. Binh Cong Van from HDBank for providing invaluable insights on integrating sustainable practices into business and finance.  Here’s what we learned:

1.Integration of ESG in Banking

 - HDBank emphasized the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into their operation, showcasing their commitment to sustainability.

 - The bank’s chairman supports ESG initiatives, reinforcing their dedication to long-term sustainable practices.

2.Commitment to Green Financing

 - HDBank is dedicated to financing green and sustainable energy projects, focusing on start-ups, providing crucial support for solar projects.

 - The bank collaborates with consultancies to develop green buildings, promoting sustainable construction practices and fostering eco-friendly infrastructure development.

3. Client Engagement and Alternative Financing Solutions

 - HDBank offers tailored financing solutions, such as offshore loans with guarantees from offshore investors, providing lower interest rates compared to domestic loans.

 - This approach helps meet diverse client needs, ensuring that clients receive the best possible financial support for unique situations.

4. Vietnam's Path to Carbon Neutrality

 - Vietnam aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, facing significant challenges in transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources.

- Effective policies and government support are essential for this transition.

5. Roles in Sustainable Development and Green Finance

 - HDBank collaborates with rice exporters to ensure a sustainable supply chain, contributing to the overall sustainability of the agricultural sector.

- The bank also assists multinational FMCG companies in Vietnam in reducing CO2 emissions and emphasizes due diligence and cautious loan ratios in agricultural financing.

These insights from HDBank underscore the importance of integrating sustainability into financial practices and highlight the opportunities and challenges in the green finance sector in Vietnam.
