Kanadevia Corporation: Hydrogen Solution Towards A Green Future And Sustainable Development

July 29, 2026 by VAHC Secretariat

On July 29, 2026, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment (HCMUNRE), the International Workshop on "Hydrogen Solutions for Agriculture, Environment, and Carbon Market" co-hosted by HCMUNRE and VAHC officially took place. The event brought together a large number of scientists, leading experts, domestic and international businesses, and diplomatic representatives from Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea. The workshop was organized to promote hydrogen applications in agriculture, environment, and carbon market development in Vietnam, while strengthening international cooperation in clean energy.

DETAILED SPEAKER REPORTS – SESSION 2

SESSION 2: HYDROGEN APPLICATIONS IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

SPEAKER 4: DR. NGUYEN PHUC THANH – BRANCH DIRECTOR, KANADEVIA CORPORATION (JAPAN)

Topic: Hydrogen Solution Towards A Green Future And Sustainable Development

Introduction to Kanadevia Corporation

Dr. Nguyen Phuc Thanh opened his presentation by introducing Kanadevia Corporation (formerly Hitachi Zosen Corporation).

Company Information:

  • Established: 1881 (over 140 years of history).

  • Headquarters: Osaka, Japan.

  • Business areas: Environmental systems, biogas plants, operation & maintenance, energy.

  • Global scale: 42 subsidiaries and branches, 15 overseas offices.

  • 1 JPY ≈ $0.007 USD.

New Company Name:

  • Changed from Hitachi Zosen Corporation to Kanadevia Corporation.

  • Meaning: Combining "Kanade" (harmony) and "Via" (path) – expressing commitment to walking together with customers and society on the path of sustainable development.

Hydrogen Generation System – HydroSpring (PEM)

Dr. Thanh introduced Kanadevia's PEM electrolysis system:

Trade Name: HydroSpring

  • Type: Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzer.

  • Input: Pure water and electricity.

  • Output: High-purity hydrogen (99.999%).

Outstanding Characteristics:

  1. Rapid Response to Renewable Energy Fluctuations:

    • Can flexibly adjust capacity according to wind and solar output.

    • Fast start-up and shutdown time.

    • Critical characteristic when integrating with variable renewable energy.

  2. High-Purity Hydrogen:

    • Product achieves 99.999% purity.

    • Suitable for industrial applications, fuel cells, and high-purity requirements.

  3. Compact Design and High Scalability:

    • Modular design, easy to scale from kW to MW.

    • Suitable for both small applications and industrial scale.

Operating Principle:

  1. Pure water is fed into electrolysis cells.

  2. Through PEM membrane and DC voltage, water is split into H₂ (cathode) and O₂ (anode).

  3. Hydrogen is dried and purified to 99.999% purity.

  4. Hydrogen is compressed and stored or used directly.

Development History and Representative Projects

Dr. Thanh presented key development milestones:

YearEvent
2000 Began fuel cell and electrolysis technology research
2018 Developed and commercialized small-scale PEM system
2024 Decided to establish Mass Production Factory in Yamanashi Prefecture. Project supported by METI under "GX Supply Chain Construction Support Program"
2025 Operated 6 MW project (≈1,126 Nm³/h) at Suntory HD Hakushu Factory. H₂ used for boiler (demonstration). Project supported by NEDO's Green Innovation Fund
2026 Broke ground on 1 GW/year PEM production factory in Yamanashi Prefecture
2029 Expected completion and start of mass production

6 MW Project at Suntory Hakushu Factory (2025):

  • Location: Hakushu Factory, Yamanashi Prefecture.

  • Capacity: 6 MW (≈1,126 Nm³/h).

  • Application: Hydrogen supplied to boiler (demonstration).

  • Goal: Testing hydrogen replacement of natural gas in industrial production.

  • Collaboration: Project supported by NEDO's Green Innovation Fund.

1 GW PEM Production Factory in Yamanashi

Dr. Thanh provided detailed information about the mass production factory:

InformationDetails
Construction Site Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan
Production Models PEM Electrolyzer Stacks
Capacity Over 1 GW/year
Scheduled Completion March 2029

Strategic Significance:

  • Kanadevia affirms its pioneering position in electrolyzer production in Japan.

  • Meeting increasing green hydrogen demand in Japan and Asia.

  • Contributing to Japan's hydrogen strategy (target: 10 million tons H₂ by 2030).

Kanadevia's Decarbonization Technologies

Dr. Thanh introduced the group's diverse carbon reduction solutions:

  1. PEM Electrolysis System (HydroSpring):

    • Producing green hydrogen from renewable energy.

  2. Biogas and Biomethane Systems:

    • Converting organic waste into clean energy.

  3. Waste-to-Energy Systems:

    • Incinerating waste for power generation with high efficiency and strict pollution control.

  4. Carbon Capture Technology (CCS/CCUS):

    • Capturing CO₂ from industrial and power processes.
