Hydrogen Egypt (H²EG) is pleased to announce the Hydrogen Industry Summit 2026 (HIS2026), a major international annual event in the clean energy sector, taking place on October 21-22, 2026, at the Arab Contractors Club in Cairo, Egypt. The summit is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Environment & Local Development, and Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities of Egypt, and is hosted and strategically sponsored by The Arab Contractors.

Message from the Chairman of Hydrogen Egypt

Mr. Khaled Nageib, CEO and Chairman of Hydrogen Egypt, along with Ms. Dalia Samir, Co-Founder and Vice President, have extended an official invitation to the Leadership of the Vietnam ASEAN Hydrogen Club (VAHC). In his invitation, Mr. Nageib expressed a strong desire to connect and collaborate with the hydrogen community in Vietnam and the ASEAN region, sharing his vision of building an international platform to accelerate the practical deployment of hydrogen and clean energy solutions in Egypt and the broader region.

With over 30 years of experience across the energy, petrochemical, ports, and maritime value chains, Mr. Nageib is a leading expert in green hydrogen and ammonia project development . He is driving flagship initiatives such as the Abu Qir Green Hydrogen & Ammonia Project, aiming to position Egypt as a hub for hydrogen production, technology localization, and sustainable energy investment.

Objectives and Scale of HIS2026

HIS2026 is designed as an international forum bringing together government leaders, industrial companies, investors, project developers, technology providers, EPC companies, financial institutions, ports, logistics, and mobility stakeholders. The goal is to accelerate the practical deployment of hydrogen and clean-energy solutions, moving from strategy to implementation.

National Strategy and Hydrogen, Ammonia Projects in Egypt – A Foundation for International Cooperation and Vision Towards 2040

National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy

Egypt has officially launched its National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy as part of its efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy and promote sustainable development, aligned with the goals of Vision 2030. The strategy, announced by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, aims to leverage Egypt's strategic geographical location and abundant natural resources, particularly solar and wind energy, to support low-carbon hydrogen production.

The strategy's objectives include increasing hydrogen and derivative production, expanding applications in industry and transport, and targeting international exports. The ambitious plan aims to capture 5-8% of the global commercial hydrogen market by 2040, with annual green hydrogen production reaching 1.5 million tonnes by 2030 and 5.8 million tonnes by 2040, creating over 100,000 jobs and contributing approximately USD 18 billion to GDP. The National Council for Green Hydrogen and Derivatives has been established to oversee annual strategy implementation.

Notable Hydrogen and Ammonia Projects

Egypt is advancing a wide range of large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia projects to realize its national strategy:

New Damietta Green Ammonia Project: The USD 873 million project is entering the FEED phase, developed by the Damietta Green Ammonia joint venture (Scatec of Norway, ECHEM, and MOPCO). The designed capacity is 150,000 tonnes per year for export and industrial and maritime applications, with commercial operation expected in Q3 2028.

Mediterranean Hydrogen Hub in Alexandria: A strategic cooperation agreement between Abu Qir, Alexfert, Orascom Construction, and UEG to develop a large-scale integrated project with 500 MW of renewable energy and production of 480 tonnes/day of RFNBO ammonia.

400,000-Tonne Green Hydrogen Project in Sinai: The Renergy Group consortium has proposed a USD 1 billion project at El-Tor, with an annual production of 400,000 tonnes for export to Europe, alongside a USD 1 billion hyperscale data center.

Ras Banas Green Ammonia Project: A joint venture between Hynfra (Poland) and Coxswains (Egypt) is planning a USD 10 billion project with an initial capacity of 400,000 tonnes/year and 1 million tonnes/year in later phases. Utilizing 2,000 MW of wind and solar power, exports are targeted for Central and Eastern Europe starting in 2031.

Projects in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone): The SCZone is a hotspot for numerous projects, including an USD 8 billion project by ReNew Power (India) and another USD 7.5 billion project currently being finalized for signing.

Realization of Memoranda of Understanding: At the Egypt-EU Investment Conference 2026, numerous agreements worth tens of billions of USD were signed, such as the 100 MW (13,000 tonnes/year) project by Orascom-Fertiglobe-SCATEC, a EUR 7 billion project at Ras Shokeir, and large-scale green ammonia projects at East Port Said and Ain Sokhna ports with partners including BP, MASDAR, and Infinity Power.

International Cooperation with Europe and Other Partners

International cooperation is a cornerstone of Egypt's strategy:

With Europe: Egypt has received technical assistance from the EBRD in developing its national strategy. An Action Plan was signed with the state of Bavaria (Germany) to promote research, technology transfer, and investment opportunities, along with a EUR 600 million commitment from the EIB. A EUR 45 million credit facility from the EU, EIB, and AFD supports the green industry program. The Ras Banas project has secured a full off-take agreement for the Central and Eastern European markets.

With Asia and Other Regions: Egypt is negotiating a USD 1 billion project with the Renergy Group, with interest from Japanese investors for the associated data center. India has also demonstrated strong interest through projects by ReNew Power (USD 8 billion) and Sterlite Power (USD 5-6 billion for a hydrogen grid). Regional cooperation with Jordan is being discussed in the fields of green ammonia and hydrogen-related industries.

Outlook and Vision Towards 2040

To realize its ambition of becoming a regional hydrogen hub, Egypt needs to mobilize approximately USD 45.6 billion in investment by 2030 and approximately USD 60 billion for green hydrogen projects. The strategy targets 42% of electricity generation from renewable energy by 2030 and a 5-8% global hydrogen market share by 2040. OECD recommendations emphasize the effective use of financial tools such as CAPEX subsidies, Contracts for Difference (CfD), and foreign exchange risk guarantees to improve project bankability.


Potential for Hydrogen and Ammonia Cooperation between Vietnam, ASEAN, and Egypt: Opportunities and Strategic Benefits

Geographical Location and Markets: Egypt is situated at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and Asia, making it an ideal location for exporting green hydrogen and ammonia to the European market. ASEAN, on the other hand, is a region with rapidly growing energy and industrial demand, also serving as a bridge to the wider Asia-Pacific market.

Development Stage: Egypt has a clear national strategy with large-scale projects already under implementation (e.g., Damietta, Ras Banas), while ASEAN is in the policy development and demonstration project phase. Learning from Egypt's experience in mechanisms, financing, and project execution would be highly valuable.

2. Key Areas of Cooperation

Vietnam and ASEAN can cooperate with Egypt in several specific fields:

Experience and Policy Sharing: Learning from Egypt's experience in national strategy development, establishing multi-stakeholder coordination councils, competitive bidding mechanisms, and financial incentive tools such as Contracts for Difference (CfD) and CAPEX subsidies. This is particularly useful for ASEAN countries currently developing their hydrogen roadmaps.

Technology and R&D Cooperation: Joint research between research institutes and universities on electrolysis, storage, transport, and industrial applications of hydrogen (steel, fertilizers, cement, maritime transport). Egypt's cooperation with El-Mansoura University and European partners on electrolysers and fuel cells provides a good reference model.

Supply Chain and Equipment Manufacturing Integration: Egypt has ambitions for local manufacturing of electrolysers and fuel cells. ASEAN, with its strong manufacturing base, can cooperate in supplying components, parts, or establishing joint ventures for local production to serve domestic and export markets.

Workforce Development: Collaboratively developing training programs and expert exchanges to build a skilled engineering and management workforce for hydrogen projects. Egypt is already cooperating with Germany and the Netherlands in this area, and ASEAN could join this regional training network.

Joint Project Development and Market Connectivity: ASEAN project developers can participate in Egypt's hydrogen value chain, for example, by providing technology, EPC services, or investing in downstream projects. Conversely, Egyptian investors and energy funds could explore opportunities in ASEAN. Joint development of technical standards and hydrogen certification would facilitate bilateral and multilateral trade.

Transport and Import/Export: Studying the feasibility of transporting liquid hydrogen or green ammonia by sea between the two regions. Egypt's exports to Europe and ASEAN countries could involve cooperation on green port infrastructure.

Multilateral Cooperation: Coordinating positions in international forums such as the IEA, IRENA, and global hydrogen initiatives to strengthen the voice and influence of developing countries in the clean energy sector.

3. Strategic Benefits for Vietnam and ASEAN

Cooperation with Egypt offers several key benefits:

Accelerating the Energy Transition: Learning and applying advanced models and technologies to achieve hydrogen goals, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels and meeting climate commitments (Net Zero).

Industrial Development and Job Creation: Building a domestic and regional hydrogen value chain will boost supporting industries, logistics, and R&D, creating high-quality jobs.

Enhancing Energy Security: Diversifying energy supply sources, reducing risks from geopolitical instability and price volatility in conventional fuel markets.

Expanding Markets and Exports: Capturing opportunities from demand for green hydrogen and ammonia in Europe and other regions as Egypt builds its export corridor.

Elevating Regional and Global Standing: Demonstrating a proactive role in the global clean energy value chain, strengthening diplomatic ties and economic cooperation with new partners.

To realize the cooperation potential, relevant stakeholders in Vietnam and ASEAN could:
