VAHC Proposes Initiating Vietnam Hydrogen Day from 2027, Tied to APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc

Historical Significance: Why October 8?
October 8 (10/08) was chosen as World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day for a reason that is both scientific and symbolic: hydrogen's atomic weight is 1.008, which can be abbreviated as 10/08 on the calendar. It is a way of honoring the lightest and most abundant element in the universe — an element that makes up about 75% of ordinary matter and emits only water when used as fuel.

The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA) first launched this event on October 8, 2014 . Since then, the day has been officially recognized by the U.S. Congress for many consecutive years through bipartisan resolutions in both the House and Senate. In 2026, it marks the 12th anniversary of the event.

Notably, hydrogen played an instrumental role in the U.S. space program, helping land humans on the Moon. Today, the technology has expanded into many sectors: from fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen refueling stations to industrial applications and large-scale energy storage.

Hydrogen Day Activities Around the World
Hydrogen Day has grown beyond U.S. borders to become a global event with hundreds of activities in many countries:

In the United States, FCHEA will host a "Circuits" webinar at 2:00 PM on October 8, focusing on three emerging sectors: data centers, geologic hydrogen, and fertilizer production . Georgia Tech is hosting a two-day event (October 7-8) bringing together leaders from industry, government, and academia in the Southeast hydrogen ecosystem . The University of Texas at Austin is hosting Hydrogen Day 2025 with sessions on hydrogen science, technology, and policy . The Center for Hydrogen Safety is hosting a webinar on the design and operation of high-pressure hydrogen trailers.

In Canada, the Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA) is hosting "Hydrogen Day on the Hill" in Ottawa, bringing together more than 30 member organizations to meet with federal government officials to discuss policies, partnerships, and investments needed to grow Canada's hydrogen economy.

In India, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) celebrated World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day 2025 on October 8 with technical presentations on hydrogen production, storage, and fuel cell applications, along with practical demonstrations of a gasifier and hydrogen fuel cell.

In China, the China Hydrogen Alliance developed the #H2October — China Hydrogen Science Month initiative, expanding activities from one day to a month with core viewpoints, new knowledge, and science popularization about hydrogen.

In the United Kingdom, the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is hosting an "International Hydrogen Day" webinar on October 8, 2026, exploring the role of chemical engineering in the evolving hydrogen landscape.

In South Korea, World Hydrogen Expo (WHE) 2026 will be held from November 4-6 at KINTEX, Goyang, tied to Korea Hydrogen Day (November 2) — a legally designated commemorative day. The event will bring together around 200 companies from 20 countries and will announce a "Joint Declaration on Hydrogen Industry Advancement".

Suggestions for Vietnam: Initiating Hydrogen Day from 2027
The Vietnam ASEAN Hydrogen Club (VAHC) has made important preparations for international integration. Since April 2024, VAHC has expanded international cooperation with leading hydrogen organizations from Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, Scotland, Ireland, Singapore, and Taiwan (China)—significant milestones affirming the increasingly prominent role of Vietnam's hydrogen community within the global hydrogen value chain.

VAHC has identified 2026 as a pivotal year, shifting from policy dialogue and technology showcases toward concrete project implementation. VAHC's three strategic priorities for 2026 include: strengthening Vietnam–ASEAN hydrogen ecosystem connectivity, advancing high-feasibility pilot projects, and expanding hydrogen applications across key sectors of society.

One of the most specific and notable initiatives is the proposed hydrogen bus (H2 Bus) project in Phu Quoc, toward APEC 2027 seeking for supporter and approval— an event to be hosted on Phu Quoc Island. The project aims to reduce emissions in the tourism sector while positioning Phu Quoc as a symbol of green innovation and forward-looking energy transition.

Proposing to initiate Vietnam Hydrogen Day from 2027 is VAHC's next strategic move, with specific suggestions:

First, choose October 8 — aligning with the global movement, leveraging the scientific significance of hydrogen's atomic weight (1.008) and existing international recognition. This is the fastest way for Vietnam to connect with the global hydrogen community.

Second, organize events tied to APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc. VAHC could propose a series of activities including an international workshop, hydrogen technology exhibition, and H2 Bus demonstration — as part of the program welcoming APEC 2027. This would position Vietnam as a hydrogen hub in the ASEAN region.

Third, develop an "H2October Vietnam" model — learning from China's initiative, expanding activities from one day to a month with educational events, technical workshops, and technology demonstrations at universities and industrial parks.

Fourth, leverage GHIAA membership to invite international experts and hydrogen associations from South Korea, Japan, and Canada to participate in events in Vietnam, creating opportunities for strategic partner connection and investment-technology cooperation.

Fifth, integrate with VAHC's existing activities such as its monthly and annual international hydrogen workshop series, collaboration with universities like HCMUNRE, and initiatives applying hydrogen in agriculture, environment, and carbon markets.

With the foundation already established through international cooperation, a broad international partner network, and specific projects underway, VAHC is fully positioned to initiate Vietnam Hydrogen Day from 2027 — turning October 8 annually into an occasion for Vietnam to affirm its commitment to clean energy and position itself on the global hydrogen map.
