Driving Hydrogen Mobility: Toyota Tsusho’s Role in Korea’s Clean Energy Future

Driving Hydrogen Mobility: Toyota Tsusho’s Role in Korea’s Clean Energy Future

Speaker: Mr. Heecheol Kim, H2 Team, Toyota Tsusho Korea Corporation

Presentation Title: Hydrogen Business Introduction

Toyota Tsusho’s Total Hydrogen Solution

Toyota Tsusho is deploying a comprehensive hydrogen mobility ecosystem, covering the full value chain:

  • Production via water electrolysis powered by solar/wind

  • Transport and storage in high-pressure hydrogen tanks

  • Utilization in fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), drones, and stationary systems

The company supplies both hardware (tanks, valves, MEAs, bipolar plates) and system integration, leveraging Toyota’s fuel cell technology and global standards.

Korea’s Hydrogen Economy: A Government-Driven Revolution

Since 2019, South Korea has pursued an aggressive hydrogen roadmap:

MilestoneTarget
2025 8,000 new FCEVs, 450 H₂ stations
2030 300,000 FCEVs across buses, trucks, garbage trucks
Current 39,000+ FCEVs and 407 H₂ refueling stations (Mar 2025)

The government offers substantial subsidies to accelerate adoption:

  • Up to KRW 460 million (~USD 350k) for FCEV buses and trucks

FCEV Production & Market Trends

Toyota and Hyundai are major players:

OEM2023 FCEV Units2025 Target
Hyundai NEXO 9,000 units 6,000 units
Toyota Mirai 5,000 units 2,000 units

Hyundai is scaling up its bus production (Jeonju plant: 3,000/year), overcoming early market hurdles like low infrastructure coverage and competition from low-cost Chinese EV buses.
